Introduction and Importance of Water in Poultry Production

Water is the most critical and abundant nutrient in poultry nutrition, forming about 65–70% of body weight in birds. It is essential for digestion, nutrient transport, temperature regulation, waste excretion, and metabolic processes. In broilers and layers, even short periods of water deprivation can cause stress, reduced feed intake, lower growth rates, and decreased egg production. The availability, cleanliness, and temperature of drinking water are key to ensuring optimum performance and bird welfare.

Water intake in poultry is closely related to feed consumption, ambient temperature, humidity, diet composition, and production stage. Typically, birds consume 1.6–2.0 times as much water as feed under moderate temperatures (21°C). At higher temperatures (above 30°C), water intake may double as birds increase drinking to maintain body temperature.

Estimated Water co bird per day = Age (days) * 5.28 ml

(Factor 5.1 be used for flocks raised in the cooler months and 5.7 for flocks raised during the summer)

Key factors influencing water intake include:

  • Environmental temperature – water consumption increases approximately 6–7% for every 1°C rise in temperature above 21°C.

  • Humidity and ventilation – high humidity and poor ventilation increase water needs.

  • Feed composition – high protein, salt, or fiber diets increase water demand.

  • Bird age and type – chicks drink less water than adults; layers consume more due to egg production.

  • Water temperature – birds prefer water at 10–25°C.

  • Health status – diseases like diarrhea drastically raise water intake.

Effects of Poor Water Quality and Water Treatment Methodsnsumption per

Poor water quality can lead to reduced feed intake, diarrhea, poor growth, lower egg production, and even mortality.

Iron and manganese can stain water systems; high salinity causes dehydration; and bacterial contamination spreads diseases.

Treatment methods include:

  • Filtration – removes suspended solids.

  • Chlorination – disinfects and controls bacterial growth (maintain 2–3 ppm residual chlorine).

  • UV radiation – kills microorganisms without chemicals.

  • Reverse osmosis – removes dissolved minerals and salts.

  • Acidification – adjusts pH and reduces bacterial load.

Water Quality for Poultry

Water quality is as vital as water quantity. Contaminated or mineral-heavy water affects health, feed conversion, and production.Common contaminants include bacteria, excess minerals, organic matter, and chemicals. Ideal standards for poultry drinking water:

Water Management and Practical Recommendations

  • Regular monitoring and management of water systems ensure optimum bird performance.

  • Water lines should be flushed weekly, and tanks cleaned frequently.
Measure water consumption daily – sudden changes may indicate disease or equipment failure.

  • Provide cool water during hot weather and ensure adequate drinker space for all birds.

Simple thumb rules:

Broilers: 1.6–2.2 liters water per kg feed consumed.

Layers: 200–250 ml per hen per day (varies with temperature).

Ensure 1 nipple drinker per 10–12 birds or 1 bell drinker per 50 birds.

In conclusion: water quality and consumption are fundamental for achieving high performance in poultry farming.

Proper water management, combined with routine quality testing and hygiene, prevents production losses and ensures bird welfare.
